The Maison Curutchet is a building designed by the French architect Le Corbusier in the year 1948 for Doctor Pedro Curutchet. Like all of Corbusier’s projects, the Curutchet House is an astounding piece of architecture. One of the first things you notice at first glance is the large tree inside the house. Juxtapositioned against straight-lined architecture, each storey appears to mimic a maze around the large tree. The space is also a very important quality in this building as it is gained through open walls, multiple ramps, and straight staircases, as well as pilotis which raise the building closer to the light from the sky. Comparing the Maison Curutchet to all of Corbusier’s other works is such a joyful experience. You realize his deliberate reference to the profession of Dr. Curutchet who was a surgeon whilst in works like the Maison Guiette you can associate small touches of the home with an artist’s home. I enjoy the simplicity which is ever-present in the home. Not the kind of simplicity which is common in the form of luxury but simplicity of the soul. Because the building is dated, you are able to feel the materials, you can feel how each window was placed, how each slab of wood is made to compliment the white wall of a staircase or aluminum cylinders which dressed each pillar in the building. The details of the space are the split between understanding why the home is so special and simply overlooking the entire creation. The openness in a small building and its ability to draw so much light as the tree would. We could assume it could have been his deliberate intention. As is with clothing, it’s becoming more pivotal to understand the reasons behind special creations. Clothes in runway collections have allowed individuals the opportunity to have their entire lives transformed and the reason behind that transformation cannot simply be a coincidence. There is an unexplored theory behind creation and this is evident in the theory you can reference in spaces designed by Corbusier such as the Curutchet home.
